Pick one region or shop them all—great finds await in all corners of Greater Phoenix | Text & photography by Josie Jackson
The Greater Phoenix area is well known for its array of premium shops and open-air marketplaces, as well as a continually growing list of luxury designer stores. My advice? Travel lightly because you’ll want room to pack some shopping treasures—no matter what part of the metro area you visit.
Open-air Desert Ridge Marketplace holds 1.2 million square feet of your favorite shops. Power up at Breakfast Kitchen Bar—order the ice-cream-topped Churro Waffle (#cheatday)—then grab a chic pair of sunglasses at Sunglass Hut. I love all the warmer-weather-inspired shoes at DSW. Hint: Become a VIP for extra savings. I can’t be the only person who changes up their tablescapes seasonally. Pier 1 Imports’ chargers and napkins add a finished touch. For the latest trends in curvy fashion, Torrid has you covered, ladies. Calling all foodies: For a quick lunch option, try Tikka Shack. Trust me when I say the Masala Fries are the best fries I’ve ever had. Up for more fun? Don’t miss live-band karaoke at Copper Blues or the free weekend performances at the central District Stage.
If you’re a bargain hunter like me, set your sights on Outlets at Anthem. I picked up a pair of wide-leg trousers I can’t wait to wear from Ann Taylor Factory Store, where professional styles are up to 50% off. Finding the perfect work bag can be a challenge, but I loved the selection at Coach Outlet. Need a gift for your techie? A pair of noise-canceling headphones from Bose Factory Store is the way to go. For a sweet break, Yogurberry’s delicious options won’t break your calorie budget. Finally, share the fun with a pic at the Instagrammable “hello wall” or #pinkwallaz.
Downtown & Central Phoenix
In the heart of ever-booming Downtown Phoenix, Roosevelt Row cradles a collection of eclectic shops. Made Art Boutique is the place to pick up a handmade print. I lived my best vintage life as I tried on gorgeous vintage clothing from Antique Sugar. Check out the awesome local graphic tees at Rubymint General. Round out your visit at Be Coffee + Food + Stuff. The delicious avocado toast makes a perfect midday snack.
Shopping, dining, rejuvenating—Biltmore Fashion Park has it all. This sophisticated outdoor shopping destination holds Arizona’s only Saks Fifth Avenue, where a style advisor can help you shop for that perfect outfit. After a facial at nearby Opal Skin and Wax, I headed to Citrine Natural Beauty Bar to shop their divine natural skin care products. Looking for inspiration for your home? Woods & Whites features handcrafted finds from artisans near and far. Missed breakfast? B:Fast cereal bar has more than 25 cereals to choose from. For lunch or dinner, get a Kobe burger and truffle fries at Zinburger, then enjoy a honey-sweetened treat for dessert from Honeymee, the California chain’s first Arizona location.
With a mix of local and national retailers, Uptown Plaza has plenty to offer. Begin with brunch at Elly’s Brunch & Cafe (the Latina omelette is my favorite). Pick up some cruelty-free beauty and home products at Lather. I personally love the Cranberry Sugar Rub and the Lavender Lime Moisturizer. Sustainable fashion lovers, you must stop at Local Nomad, which features a curated collection of handcrafted clothing and gifts, including fun cards and accessories. Grab the gals and head to Prose for a mani-pedi outing, followed by Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s. (It’s a hot spot, so call ahead for reservations.)
Eat, shop, play. At Scottsdale Quarter, you really can have it all. At Kendra Scott, associate Ali showed me plenty of options for adding that extra bling to an outfit. Eyeglass wearers who, like myself, love mixing things up should visit Warby Parker, where designer frames start at $95, making multiple pairs affordable. Prime paperie Paper Source offers those quirky-yet-relatable cards to grab for your friends or significant other. Le Macaron makes me feel like I am in Paris with each bite of their delectable, wispy macarons. On your way up to the Ipic theaters, take an #instagrammable shot on the colorful stairs. Make sure to leave time to visit Kierland Commons, another fashion-forward shopping district just across the street.
Three levels of shopping and 250-plus stores await you at Scottsdale Fashion Square. Fuel up at the new Mexican restaurant Tocaya Organica. And yes, they have vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Men, look sharp with custom suits, made to order and delivered to your door in two weeks, from Indochino. Makeup aficionados will love the plethora of eyeshadow pallets, brushes, and more at Morphe. Stroll the mall’s luxury wing, home to more than 20 designer brands, including Trina Turk, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, and Bottega Veneta.
After visiting Fountain Hills’ River of Time Museum or swinging a driver at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, pay a visit to Suburban Sole. Customers continue to return to this local shop for its immense selection of comfortable yet stylish shoes. If you’re visiting in early spring, mark your calendar for the impressive Fountain Hills Fine Art & Wine Festival, Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8. Visit with the makers as you shop the booths of more than 125 nationally acclaimed and award-winning artists.
With more than two dozen restaurants, a comedy club, Flix Brewhouse movie theatre, and more, Downtown Chandler is worth a visit. Out-of-towners and natives alike know Sibley’s West gift shop is the place to go for gifts for yourself or a friend. With work from more than 230 Arizona artists, you are sure to find the perfect treasure. Art lovers will love the Downtown Chandler Art Walk, the third Friday of every month, with live music, free activities for children, and multiple artists displaying their work. Enjoy a refreshing treat from Paletas Betty, which features traditional Mexican frozen fruit pops and beverages in more than 20 flavors. The sweet and spicy Piña con Chile was my pick.
You’re going to want to make that exit off the I-10 to visit The Shoppes at Casa Paloma, also in Chandler. You see it in major department stores, but Philosophy skin care has its only US store here. Call or stop in to be notified about their monthly special events, which include complimentary treatments with Philosophy products. If you love the look of a well-put-together living space, make sure to stop by my favorite store in Arizona, Found by Domestic Bliss. Their pieces are both timeless and modern. While you’re there, check out T. Madison, a local home and clothing boutique tucked inside Found. Consignment lovers, you will adore Pandora’s Purse, featuring gently used or new bags from Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci… You’ll be in designer handbag heaven!
Luxury bargain shoppers know Phoenix Premium Outlets is the place to go for great selection and prices on high-end fashion. With more than 70 stores, you are bound to find a few of your favorite brands here—at discounted prices to boot. Start at Kate Spade, newly renovated and reopened in May 2019; their selection of purses can’t be beat. Arizona is known for its outdoor activities. To gear up in stylish activewear at great prices, check out Columbia Factory Store. Love to cook, or love someone who does? Stock your kitchen with a visit to Le Creuset Outlet.
A neighbor of the Arizona Cardinals’ stadium, Tanger Outlets lets you catch a bargain after you catch a game. Yogis swear by the leggings and other activewear from Lululemon Athletica. Steve Madden has made all my shoe dreams come true, offering iconic designs with everyday-shoe comfort. Kay Jewelers Outlet offers plenty of style options for that special gift. And my best happy hour award goes to: The Lola Cocktail Lab & Eatery at Westgate Entertainment District, just across the street. You can’t go wrong with the fried ravioli and a Pineapple Delight cocktail to top off a day of shopping.
Stop at The Shops at Norterra for some family time at Harkins Theatres or As You Wish Pottery Painting Place. We Phoenicians know you should always have a swimsuit at the ready. Exquisite Swimwear has a suit for every occasion. A fresh scent from a candle or diffuser adds that finishing touch to a clean house.
